About Pretty Hip Librarian
I’m a student at Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science. I love working for the library world. I appreciate art, I especially enjoy photography. I enjoy all kinds of music and love to exercise and dance.
When I first started my college career I wanted to be a dentist, but I quickly lost interest of this career when I discovered I was really good at finding information and helping others. I started working for my local public library when I was in high school, as a page/book shelver. I completed my junior college credits, enrolled in a dental assisting program, earned my certificate as a dental assistant, but didn’t enjoy the job.
I then enrolled at Rosary College, which is now known as Dominican University, and majored in World History. I was convinced I wanted to be a librarian when I noticed my own studies helped me help others. Towards the end of my undergraduate career, I found out I could enroll in two introduction courses in the library graduate program.
I successfully completed them and graduated from Dominican in 2001. The library I worked for gave me the opportunity to work in the adult reference department, and I learned a lot about the library world, and I enjoyed it very much. I participated in many library work shops offered by the Metropolitan Library System, formerly the Suburban Library System, visited many book fairs and conferences, ILA, ALA and PLA. The most memorable book fair I participated in, was FIL, Feria Internacional del Libro, in Guadalajara, Mexico. This was a great opportunity.
In the mean time, I worked very hard in hopes of saving up money, and paying off my undergrad loans. Time flew by and before I new it, I was getting older; I had not completed paying my eduacation; and I had started a new job and remained working at the library part-time on the weekends.
During the Summer of 2006, I decided to enroll back into the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. While in the program, I applied and interviewed for several scholarships. In the back of my mind I thought I would never get selected because of the huge demand, and I was one of many students wanting these opportunities.
In the Fall of 2006, the State of Illinois informed me I was one of the 15 recipiants in earning the State of Illinois Library Training Scholarship. I knew going back to school and finishing up my master’s degree was the best decision I ever made. “)
